The fight

You fought with all your strength

Until you could fight no more

From a harsh, cold childhood, through poverty, pain and adulthood

Until your last breath

I didn’t always understand you but I didn’t stop to think

How your life had shaped you, with the cards you had been dealt

But that’s what made you strong when others would have faltered

Why you wouldn’t give in, through illness, confusion and suffering

But they took your strength from you – and your dignity

And frailty overcame you, too unexpectedly

(We weren’t ready)

So now I fight for you and try to find your strength

And soon they will be accountable for taking you from us three
